Statement by Senate Democratic Leader Oscar Braynon on GOP School Gun Safety Plans
Senate Democratic Leader Oscar Braynon (D-Miami Gardens) on Friday released the following statement on the school gun safety plans released by the Republican legislative leadership and Governor Rick Scott:
“These plans incorporate two bills sponsored by Democrats – banning bump stocks (SB 456/Stewart) and risk protection orders (SB530/Gibson). Unfortunately, both plans omit a third, critically important piece of legislation Democrats have been and continue to push for: a ban on assault weapons and high capacity magazines. And that’s especially troubling given that they now know that their own commissioned poll clearly shows that a majority of Floridians, including gun owners, fully support such a ban. Yet it’s ignored.
“If the tragedies at the Pulse nightclub and, now, Stoneman Douglas High School have taught us nothing else, it is that so long as these high powered weapons of war remain available for purchase these killings will continue. No matter the age, the mental health states, the backgrounds or nationalities, this is the one common denominator shared with the majority of gunmen who have committed mass slayings in this country. And they ignore this tie at our children’s peril.
“We can beef up mental health screenings, raise the age for gun purchases, and dream up other stop gap measures, but the threat to our children and our citizens will continue until we finally take bold action to ban assault weapons designed for the battlefield from easy access in our communities. Without that, the voices of the students, and the will of the people, continue to be ignored.”
