Senator Arthenia Joyner Recognized For Championing Human Rights
TAMPA – A tireless advocate for improving the lives of all Floridians, state Senator Arthenia Joyner (D-Tampa) on Friday was recognized for those efforts by the Tampa/Hillsborough County Human Rights Council.
At the 38th Annual Human Rights Awards Breakfast in Tampa, Senator Joyner received the 2011 Hank Warren Memorial Award, an honor recognizing the government official “who has championed human rights by supporting legislation or policies that further fairness in areas that affect human existence.”
Past recipients of the award have included Hillsborough County Public Defender Julianne M. Holt, former Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio, and Fran M. Davin, Chair of the non-profit MacDonald Training Center.
Since her election to the Senate in 2006, Senator Joyner has spearheaded legislation addressing such issues as wrongful incarceration compensation, heightened penalties for female genital mutilation, and the establishment of a task force on human trafficking. An attorney, she currently serves as the Senate Democratic Caucus’ Leader Pro Tem.
