Second Amendment Gun Rights Bill Signed into Law
Senate Bill 234 Signed by Governor Rick Scott
Tallahassee —
Senate Bill 234, is the second piece of legislation sponsored by Senator Greg Evers (R-Baker) to protect the Second Amendment rights of Floridians that has been signed into law by Governor Rick Scott.
Senator Evers filed the bill to protect the rights of law-abiding citizens who have licenses to carry concealed firearms and also to conform Florida’s law regarding the purchase of rifles and shotguns in other states, to federal law.
Senate Bill 234 provides that concealed weapons license holders shall NOT be subject to criminal arrest or prosecution if a firearm, that is being carried concealed, accidentally or inadvertently becomes visible to another person.
The bill also clarifies that concealed weapons license holders may store a firearm in a private vehicle that is lawfully parked except in those places that are already exempted under section 790.251(7), or the “parking lot law.”
Further, the bill removes the obsolete language regarding the purchase of rifles and shotguns in contiguous states that was previously required by federal law for out-of-state purchases and replaces it with language to conform to current federal requirements that allow purchases of long guns in other states.
“I thank Governor Scott for supporting and signing this very good bill into law,” said Senator Evers. “Law abiding citizens should not be subject to criminal arrest, prosecution or harassment because a firearm, that is being lawfully carried concealed, accidentally becomes briefly exposed.”
“Senator Evers is a true champion of the Second Amendment and his dedication to protecting Second Amendment rights is deeply appreciated by law-abiding gun owners all over the state,” said Marion Hammer, Executive Director of Unified Sportsmen of Florida and past President of the National Rifle Association. “When he serves his district on Second Amendment issues, we all benefit from his outstanding commitment to freedom and the Constitution.”
Senator Evers currently represents Florida Senate District 2, which includes parts of Escambia, Okaloosa, Santa Rosa, Washington, Bay, and Holmes counties. Previously, Senator Evers served in the House of Representatives, representing Florida House District 1, which includes parts of Escambia, Santa Rosa and Okaloosa Counties. He is a farmer and small businessman who was elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 2001, was subsequently re-elected, and elected to the Florida Senate in 2010. Evers has put his experience in agriculture and business to good use in the Florida Legislature and is proud of his legislative accomplishments on behalf of Florida’s critical agriculture industry, economic development and job creation, and Second Amendment issues.
