Senator Negron Announces Community College Partnership Agreement

Prioritizes 2+2 Program, Preserves mission of Florida-s Community Colleges

Tallahassee —

Senator Joe Negron (R-Stuart) today announced a partnership agreement with the Florida College System (FCS), providing a framework for the collaborative oversight of Florida’s community colleges.

“I would like to thank Dr. Henningsen for his effort to reach this agreement. We have many excellent community colleges in Florida, including two of the past three Aspen Prize winners,” said Senator Negron. “I am confident our community colleges will continue to excel at their primary mission of facilitating Florida’s exceptional two plus two program as well as local workforce support.”

The agreement announced by Senator Negron successfully realigns the mission and role of Florida’s community colleges in meeting labor market demands and community and regional needs. The agreement clarifies bachelor degree programs as a secondary mission of community colleges, with total bachelor degree (upper level enrollment) annually capped as a percentage of total enrollment per institution.  Additionally, the name of the “Florida College System” will revert to the “Florida Community College System.” The existing one-year prohibition on new bachelor degree programs will repeal as currently scheduled. Moving forward, verification of the need for bachelor degree offerings will require validation by an independent third party entity.
