Senate Resolution

A resolution recognizing the first day of Hurricane

3

Season, June 1, 2008, as a day of prayer.

     WHEREAS, throughout our history, our Nation has turned to

6

prayer for strength and guidance in times of challenge and

7

uncertainty, and

8

     WHEREAS, past presidents, including President George

9

Washington, President Abraham Lincoln, and others, have called

10

for a day of prayer at times of crisis and disaster, and

11

     WHEREAS, our first President wrote in 1790, "May the father

12

of all mercies scatter light and not darkness in our paths," and

13

     WHEREAS, as we face the challenges of our own times, God's

14

purpose continues to guide us, and we continue to trust in the

15

goodness of His plans, and

16

     WHEREAS, we have been warned by leading forecasters to

17

expect several major storms this season, and

18

     WHEREAS, our preparations can protect against hurricanes but

19

cannot influence the strength or frequency with which they occur,

20

and

21

     WHEREAS, in addition to these preparations, the residents of

22

this state are in need of protection, NOW, THEREFORE,

23

Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

25

26

     That, in recognition of the first day of Hurricane Season,

27

June 1, 2008, the Senate calls upon the residents of this state

28

to pray that God will have mercy on our state and protect us from

29

harm.
