A bill to be entitled
2An act relating to district school board membership;
3creating s. 1001.3615, F.S.; requiring that district
4school boards consist of nine members in counties where
5the population exceeds a certain number; providing for
6single-member and at-large districts; providing for the
7election of a chair and vice chair of the school board;
8providing an effective date.

10Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

12     Section 1.  Section 1001.3615, Florida Statutes, is created
13to read:
14     1001.3615  Election of district school board members in
15counties in which the population exceeds 2 million.-
16     (1)  Notwithstanding any other provision of this part, in a
17county in which the population exceeds 2 million people, the
18district school board shall consist of nine members. The school
19district shall be divided into seven single-member residence
20areas from each of which a school board member residing in the
21residence area shall be elected by the electors residing in that
22residence area only. Two school board members shall reside in
23and be elected from the district at large. The district school
24board member residence areas shall cover the entire district and
25be as nearly equal in population as practicable, according to
26the most recent decennial census.
27     (2)  The school board members elected at large shall serve
28as the chair and vice chair of the school board, and the ballot
29shall be styled in such a manner as to provide for that choice.
30     Section 2.  This act shall take effect July 1, 2011.
