House Resolution
2A resolution acknowledging the contributions of Phi Beta
3Sigma Fraternity and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority and
4recognizing March 24, 2011, as "Sigma-Zeta Day" in
5Florida.

7     WHEREAS, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity was founded at Howard
8University in Washington, D.C., on January 9, 1914, by A.
9Langston Taylor, Leonard F. Morse, and Charles I. Brown, and
10     WHEREAS, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, with the assistance of Phi
11Beta Sigma, was founded at Howard University in Washington,
12D.C., on January 16, 1920, by Arizona Cleaver, Myrtle Tyler,
13Viola Tyler, Fannie Pettie, and Pearl Neal, and
14     WHEREAS, both Phi Beta Sigma and Zeta Phi Beta, through
15statewide and local partnerships, address many of the challenges
16that racial and ethnic minority groups face today such as health
17issues and behaviors, birth of healthy babies, HIV/AIDS, and
18teenage pregnancy, and
19     WHEREAS, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity currently lists 16
20collegiate chapters and 16 alumni chapters in Florida and Zeta
21Phi Beta Sorority's membership numbers 16 collegiate chapters
22and 43 alumni chapters in the state, NOW, THEREFORE,

24Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
25Florida:

27     That March 24, 2011, is recognized as "Sigma-Zeta Day" in
28Florida in recognition of the many civic contributions that the
29members of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority
30have made to this state.
