2A resolution recognizing April 16, 2011, as "World Circus
3Day" in Florida.

5     WHEREAS, the circus in America is a beloved and enduring
6art form and part of our rich cultural heritage, and
7     WHEREAS, for over 200 years, the circus has entertained
8generations of American families with amazing feats of physical
9skill, comedy, theater, and music, while exposing us to the
10cultures and wonders of the world, and
11     WHEREAS, today's circus continues to amaze and inspire
12children of all ages by bridging generations and cultures in the
13pursuit of the very best in circus arts and skills, and
14     WHEREAS, the circus plays an important role in the
15conservation of endangered species by exposing people to the
16intelligence, strength, and agility of its amazing animal
17partners while drawing public attention to the need to protect
18and preserve them, and
19     WHEREAS, Florida is home to many of the best-known and
20longest-operating circuses in the country, including Ringling
21Bros. and Barnum & Bailey, the Greatest Show on Earth, currently
22celebrating its 141st year in 2011, and
23     WHEREAS, the Ringling Bros. Center for Elephant
24Conservation in central Florida is home to the largest herd of
25Asian elephants outside of Asia and is dedicated to the study,
26conservation, and future of the species, and
27     WHEREAS, Florida is also home to many world class youth
28circuses as well as the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art
29Circus Museum in Sarasota, one of the premier circus museums in
30the world, and
31     WHEREAS, in 2008, the World Circus Federation was created
32under the patronage of S.A.S. Princess Stephanie of Monaco to
33honor the legacy of her late father Prince Rainier III, a patron
34of circus arts and culture, and
35     WHEREAS, the North American delegate to the federation is
36the Outdoor Amusement Business Association (OABA), based in
37Winter Park, representing many circuses throughout Florida and
38the United States, and
39     WHEREAS, the federation established World Circus Day as an
40opportunity for communities around the world to celebrate their
41rich circus culture and heritage, and
42     WHEREAS, Florida should be recognized and celebrated for
43its unique role as the circus capital of the world, NOW,
44THEREFORE,

46Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
47Florida:

49     That April 16, 2011, is recognized as "World Circus Day" in
50Florida and all Floridians are urged to celebrate, promote, and
51preserve Florida's rich circus culture and history.
