SENATOR CAMPBELL APPLAUDS VOTING RIGHTS RESTORATION PETITION DRIVE NUMBERS AS BEST HOPE FOR FLORIDA’S FUTURE
TALLAHASSEE – State Senator Daphne Campbell (D-Miami) on Wednesday, released the following statement following news reports that the drive to meet the 700,000 signature threshold in time to place the voting rights restoration initiative on the November 2018 ballot is succeeding:
“I am extremely pleased with the news that Floridians for a Fair Democracy is approaching 700,000 signatures for their ballot initiative that would automatically restore voting rights for all nonviolent felons who have served their sentences, completed parole or probation and paid restitution.
“It is my hope that by making our democracy more representative of our state that we will no longer have to contend with multi-millionaire governors who don’t understand the real issues that real people face.
“In yesterday’s State of the State address the Governor once again failed to provide a vision for Florida that addresses the needs of all of Florida’s citizens, not just the privileged few. There was nothing in his message about empowering Florida’s youth, bringing high paying skilled jobs to the State or fighting to maintain temporary protective status for Haitian immigrants facing the persecution of President Trump, to name just a few examples.
“The lack of an inclusive vision that seeks to help all Floridians deeply saddens me, as anything else is not only disastrous for the citizens of District 38, but everyone across the state of Florida.
“We can no longer afford to follow a vision that does not seek to serve every citizen. It is time that we embrace principles that restore our public schools, protect our environment and trains our citizens for jobs of the future.
“2018 offer us an opportunity to seek a vision that does just that, and it is my hope that the people of Florida will join me in signing this important petition that will start us on the road to a stronger and fairer Florida.”
