Statement From Senator Linda Stewart On The Tragedy In Uvalde, Texas

Orlando – State Senator Linda Stewart (D-Orlando) on Thursday issued the following statement in response to the Texas school shooting.

“I am deeply saddened by the senseless tragedy that occurred Tuesday in Uvalde, Texas, and my heart goes out to the families and community.”

“Two mass shootings in two weeks. How many more innocent people must die? When will we come together to protect our children and communities? What will it take? The Central Florida community was effected firsthand by gun violence at the Pulse nightclub, and knows all too well the lasting pain these tragedies inflict upon a community.”

“Once again I am making the call for change! Our state has the ability to effectively curb these acts of violence. For years I have carried legislation that would have taken steps to end the violence, yet the legislature refuses to take up any of these bills. Banning the sale of assault rifles and high capacity magazines, registering ghost guns, closing gun show loopholes, establishing universal background checks, and strengthening red flag laws are all steps that we could easily take to immediately prevent future tragedies. I will be refiling legislation that I have carried, along with a new bill to screen the mental health of those purchasing a gun.”

“I implore my colleagues in the legislature and nationwide to have the courage to act, and finally take meaningful action to work to end the gun violence pandemic that continues to plague our nation. The time is – NOW!  Enough is enough!”
