  1                    Senate Resolution No.     
  2         A resolution honoring Florida A&M University on
  3         being named "College of the Year."
  4
  5         WHEREAS, on August 25, 1997, Florida A&M University was
  6  named the first "College of the Year" by Time Magazine and the
  7  Princeton Review, and
  8         WHEREAS, the university was chosen for the honor by a
  9  team of educators and education experts over other major
10  universities throughout the nation such as Depaul University,
11  the University of Iowa, UCLA, Trinity College, DePauw
12  University, and the University of California system, and
13         WHEREAS, the university's choice as College of the Year
14  and Florida A&M University's academic rise to prominence is
15  the culmination of 13 years of untiring effort on the part of
16  Florida A&M University President, Frederick Humphries, and
17         WHEREAS, among the significant changes which have taken
18  place at Florida A&M University is its increase in total
19  enrollment, from 3,200 in 1985 to in excess of 10,000 today,
20  and its increase in the number of graduates, from 463 in 1991
21  to 1,524 in 1996, surpassing Howard University as the nation's
22  top producer of black baccalaureates, and
23         WHEREAS, the average combined SAT score of freshmen at
24  Florida A&M University has increased from 700 to 1036 in the
25  same period, and
26         WHEREAS, last year Florida A&M University was one of
27  the top ten schools receiving pharmacy research grants, and
28         WHEREAS, this year Florida A&M University received a $3
29  million grant, the largest in the university's history, from
30  the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, and

  1         WHEREAS, these are all stellar achievements for the
  2  110-year old land grant university that once was the only
  3  public institution of higher learning that African Americans
  4  could attend, and
  5         WHEREAS, it is with great pride that the Florida Senate
  6  recognizes Florida A&M University for the honor which has been
  7  bestowed upon the university and the level of academic
  8  excellence it has attained, NOW, THEREFORE,
  9
10  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:
11
12         That the Florida Senate honors Florida A&M University
13  on being named the first "College of the Year" by Time
14  Magazine and the Princeton Review, and commends the
15  university, its faculty, and staff on the high level of
16  academic achievement which has led to this honor.
17         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution,
18  with the Seal of the Senate affixed, be presented to Dr.
19  Frederick Humphries as a tangible token of the sentiments of
20  the Florida Senate.
