Florida House of Representatives - 1997 HR 9091 By Representative Dawson-White 1 House Resolution 2 A resolution honoring Marian Wright Edelman for 3 her career as an advocate for disadvantaged 4 Americans. 5 6 WHEREAS, Marian Wright Edelman, founder and president 7 of the Children's Defense Fund, has been an advocate for 8 disadvantaged Americans for her entire professional career, 9 and 10 WHEREAS, Marian Wright Edelman has led the 11 Washington-based Children's Defense Fund to become a strong 12 voice for children and families nationwide, and 13 WHEREAS, the mission of the Children's Defense Fund is 14 to educate the nation about the needs of children and 15 encourage preventive investment in children prior to their 16 getting sick, dropping out of school, or getting into serious 17 trouble, and 18 WHEREAS, as a graduate of Spelman College and Yale Law 19 School, Marian Wright Edelman began her career in the 20 mid-1960's as the first black woman admitted to the 21 Mississippi Bar, where she directed the NAACP Legal Defense 22 and Education Fund office in Jackson, Mississippi, and 23 WHEREAS, Marian Wright Edelman furthered her quest by 24 going on to Washington, D.C., as counsel for the Poor People's 25 March that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., began organizing 26 before his death, and 27 WHEREAS, Marian Wright Edelman has received many 28 honorary degrees and awards, including the Albert Schweitzer 29 Humanitarian Prize and the Heinz Award, and was a MacArthur 30 Foundation Prize Fellow, and 31 1 CODING: Words stricken are deletions; words underlined are additions.
