  1                         House Resolution
  2         A resolution commemorating the generous
  3         contributions of Publix Super Markets, Inc.,
  4         its employees, and the George W. Jenkins family
  5         to the United Way of America.
  6
  7         WHEREAS, Publix Super Markets, Inc., founded in Winter
  8  Haven, Florida, in 1930 by George W. Jenkins, has always been
  9  committed to the communities it serves, and
10         WHEREAS, the company is the largest private employer in
11  the State of Florida, operating 448 stores and employing more
12  than 87,000 associates in this great state, and
13         WHEREAS, the employees of Publix Super Markets,
14  combined with Publix Super Markets Charities, Inc., and the
15  George W. Jenkins family, contributed more than $10 million in
16  1996 to the United Way of America, to be redistributed to the
17  communities in which the company operates, and
18         WHEREAS, the United Way of America honored Publix Super
19  Markets, Inc., on February 26, 1997, with the Spirit of
20  America Award, and
21         WHEREAS, the Spirit of America Award is the highest
22  honor the United Way can bestow upon a company for excellence
23  in employee education about the United Way, company-wide
24  employee campaigns, corporate contributions, and volunteer
25  programs, NOW, THEREFORE,

27  Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
28  Florida:

30         That the House of Representatives of the State of
31  Florida joins the citizens of Florida in commemorating the

  4         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution
  5  be presented to Howard Jenkins, chairman and chief executive
  6  officer of Publix Super Markets, Inc., as a tangible token of
  7  the sentiments expressed herein.
