  1                         House Resolution

  2         A resolution commemorating the 36th anniversary

  3         of the Bay of Pigs invasion, on April 17, 1997.

  4

  5         WHEREAS, on January 1, 1959, a Communist dictator took

  6  over the government of the Republic of Cuba, and

  7         WHEREAS, there began immediately afterward a massive

  8  exodus of Cuban nationals, most of whom came to the United

  9  States, and

10         WHEREAS, men and women of American and Cuban origin

11  decided that the only way to overthrow the Communist

12  dictatorship subjugating the people of Cuba was through an

13  armed invasion, and

14         WHEREAS, on April 17, 1961, almost fifteen hundred men,

15  trained, directed, armed, and equipped by the United States,

16  landed on the southern coast of Cuba in an area known as

17  "Bahia de Cochinos" (Bay of Pigs), and

18         WHEREAS, for the next few days, these men fought

19  against an army immensely superior in manpower, firepower, and

20  supplies, and

21         WHEREAS, in the course of battle, almost one hundred

22  men died, including several who were captured and immediately

23  assassinated by the forces of the Cuban dictator, and

24         WHEREAS, almost all of the remaining forces were

25  captured and imprisoned for almost eighteen months, and

26         WHEREAS, these men were subsequently ransomed by

27  President John F. Kennedy, returned to the United States, and

28  became productive members of our society without ever

29  forgetting their native country, Cuba, and

30         WHEREAS, on April 17, 1997, the 36th anniversary of the

31  Bay of Pigs invasion will be commemorated, NOW, THEREFORE,

  1  Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of

  2  Florida:

  3

  4         That the House of Representatives hereby honors and

  5  extends its congratulations to Brigada de Asalto 2506 (Assault

  6  Brigade 2506) and to all its members, living and deceased.

  7         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the House of

  8  Representatives hereby expresses its desire for the prompt

  9  liberation of the Republic of Cuba from the Communist

10  dictatorship that oppresses all its people.

11         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution

12  be presented to Brigada de Asalto 2506 as a tangible token of

13  the sentiments expressed herein.
