2 A resolution recognizing April 11, 1997, as
3 National Pay Inequity Awareness Day.

5 WHEREAS, more than 30 years after the passage of the
6 Equal Pay Act, women continue to suffer from an unfair gap
7 between the salaries of women and men, and
8 WHEREAS, according to a state-by-state study, women in
9 Florida rank among the most economically dependent in the
10 nation, and
11 WHEREAS, women nationally are paid only 71 cents for
12 each dollar a man earns, while in Florida a woman earns even
13 less: 69.6 cents for every dollar a man is paid, and
14 WHEREAS, April 11 marks the day that a woman's pay,
15 combined with her earnings from the previous year, finally
16 equals the wages a man is paid in just one calendar year, and
17 WHEREAS, fair pay is a long-term investment with a big
18 payoff in terms of stronger employee loyalty, better
19 production, and higher morale, and
20 WHEREAS, on April 11, 1997, women across the nation
21 will join together to call attention to the inequity between
22 the wages of women and men, NOW, THEREFORE,

24 Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
25 Florida:

27 That the House of Representatives pauses in its
28 deliberation to recognize April 11, 1997, as National Pay
29 Inequity Awareness Day.
