  1                         House Resolution

  2         A resolution designating April 10, 1997, as

  3         F.S.U. Day.

  4

  5         WHEREAS, the 50th anniversary of Florida State

  6  University comes in the 146th year since the establishment of

  7  the institution by the Legislature as the seminary west of the

  8  Suwanee River, and

  9         WHEREAS, its Tallahassee campus is the oldest

10  continuous site of higher education in Florida, and

11         WHEREAS, building on one of the nation's finest liberal

12  arts colleges for women, Florida State, by 1960, had become

13  nationally recognized as a major research university, and

14         WHEREAS, most sources cite this conversion from a

15  women's liberal arts college to a research university, as one

16  of the few successful such conversions in the United States,

17  and

18         WHEREAS, today, Florida State University is ranked as a

19  Carnegie I Research Institution, and

20         WHEREAS, the far-sighted support of the Legislature to

21  provide state funding for the development of scientific

22  research laboratories, which led to unprecedented federal

23  support for and recognition of the emerging university,

24  contributed to the early success of Florida State University,

25  and

26         WHEREAS, state support for these scholarly activities

27  continues today, and

28         WHEREAS, while developing internationally recognized

29  programs in the Fine and Performing Arts and in the Basic and

30  Social Sciences, Florida State University has also developed

31  strong student life programs including one of the major

  1  intercollegiate athletic programs in the county, NOW,

  2  THEREFORE,

  4  Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of

  5  Florida:

  6

  7         That the House of Representatives hereby designates

  8  April 10, 1997, as F.S.U. Day in recognition of 50 years as

  9  Florida State University and 146 years as an outstanding

10  institution of higher education.

11         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution

12  be presented to Talbot "Sandy" D'Alemberte, President of

13  Florida State University, as a tangible token of the

14  sentiments expressed herein.
