  2         An act relating to transportation; amending s.

  3         334.044, F.S.; providing for the allocation of

  4         a certain percentage of each project for

  5         roadside beautification by the Department of

  6         Transportation; providing an effective date.

  8  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

10         Section 1.  Subsection (26) of section 334.044, Florida

11  Statutes, 1998 Supplement, is amended to read:

12         334.044  Department; powers and duties.--The department

13  shall have the following general powers and duties:

14         (26)  To provide for the conservation of natural

15  roadside growth and scenery and for the implementation and

16  maintenance of roadside beautification programs. To accomplish

17  this, the department shall allocate no less than 1 percent of

18  the cost of each project specifically for roadside

19  beautification on that project.  To accomplish these

20  activities, the department may contract with nonprofit

21  organizations having the primary purpose of developing youth

22  employment opportunities.

23         Section 2.  This act shall take effect July 1, 1999.
