  1                    Senate Resolution No.     

  2         A resolution commending the New York Yankees

  3         for winning the 1998 World Series and for their

  4         contributions to the State Of Florida.

  5

  6         WHEREAS, Major League Baseball's New York Yankees are

  7  owned by George M. Steinbrenner, a productive and valued

  8  resident of the City of Tampa, Florida, and

  9         WHEREAS, the Yankees, 24-time World Champions, conduct

10  their annual spring training in the City of Tampa as well as

11  maintaining in Tampa their year-round player development

12  training facility for both their major league and minor league

13  players, and

14         WHEREAS, the presence of the Yankees organization in

15  the City of Tampa provides an economic boost not only to the

16  city but to area charities and to the entire Tampa Bay area,

17  and

18         WHEREAS, members of the New York Yankees who either

19  live in or are from the Tampa Bay area include players Derek

20  Jeter, Joe Giradi, David Cone, Tino Martinez, and Coach Don

21  Zimmer, and

22         WHEREAS, the Yankees, characterized by Time Magazine as

23  the "best team ever," had an outstanding 1998 season, winning

24  125 games and losing only 50, and

25         WHEREAS, the Yankees capped the season by winning first

26  the American League Eastern Division title, then the American

27  League pennant, and ultimately the 1998 World Series, to win

28  the World Series for the second time in 3 years, and

29         WHEREAS, Yankees Manager Joe Torre did an extraordinary

30  job of managing the team through its amazing 1998 season, his

  1  third with the team, after a long and stellar career as a

  2  major league player, and

  3         WHEREAS, it is fitting and appropriate that the members

  4  of the Florida Senate commend an organization that is

  5  responsible for so much benefit to the State of Florida, NOW,

  6  THEREFORE,

  8  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

  9

10         That the New York Yankees are commended for their

11  record-setting season and for winning the 1998 World Series.

12         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that owner George M.

13  Steinbrenner, Manager Joe Torre, all Yankees coaches and

14  players, and the entire Yankees organization are further

15  commended, not only for their distinguished accomplishments on

16  behalf of Major League Baseball, but also for their many

17  contributions on behalf of the City of Tampa, the Tampa Bay

18  area, and the State of Florida.
