  1                    Senate Resolution No.     

  2         A resolution recognizing April 6, 1999, as

  3         F.S.U. Day in Florida.

  4

  5         WHEREAS, the Tallahassee campus at Florida State

  6  University is the oldest continuous site of higher education

  7  in Florida, and

  8         WHEREAS, Florida State University was founded as an

  9  institution of higher learning in 1851 by a legislative act

10  and began in Tallahassee with its first students in 1857, and

11         WHEREAS, over 205,000 men and women have graduated from

12  Florida State University, and its success as an institution is

13  reflected in the success of these graduates around the world,

14  and

15         WHEREAS, the university's mission statement emphasizes

16  teaching, research, and public service; students study in 16

17  colleges and schools, offering undergraduate and graduate

18  degrees in over 342 fields, and

19         WHEREAS, Florida State University was designated a

20  "Research I" university by the Carnegie Foundation in 1994,

21  placing F.S.U. in the elite group of the nation's top research

22  universities, and

23         WHEREAS, Florida State University's graduation rate is

24  well above the national average and the best among Florida's

25  state universities, and

26         WHEREAS, Florida State University has had five faculty

27  Nobel laureates, including the famous physicist Paul Dirac,

28  the father of modern physics, memorialized in London's

29  Westminster Abbey, and

  1         WHEREAS, the YAHOO, Internet Life magazine, ranked

  2  Florida State University as one of the 100 most "wired"

  3  colleges, and

  4         WHEREAS, while developing internationally recognized

  5  programs in the Fine and Performing Arts and in the Basic and

  6  Social Sciences, Florida State University has also developed

  7  strong student life programs, including one of the major

  8  intercollegiate athletic programs in the country, NOW,

  9  THEREFORE,

11  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

12

13         That Tuesday, April 6, 1999, is recognized as F.S.U.

14  Day in the State of Florida.
