  1                    Senate Resolution No.     

  2         A resolution recognizing the week of April

  3         18-24, 1999, as National Organ and Tissue Donor

  4         Awareness Week.

  5

  6         WHEREAS, the success of National Organ and Tissue Donor

  7  Awareness Week depends largely on the commitment made by the

  8  leadership of this state to ensure that every Florida citizen

  9  becomes aware of and has an opportunity to alleviate the

10  critical need for organ and tissue donations, and

11         WHEREAS, through statutory mandates, the State of

12  Florida Organ and Tissue Donor Education Program, the Organ

13  and Tissue Procurement and Transplantation Advisory Board, the

14  Transplant Advisory Council, and the Bone Marrow Advisory

15  Board were created to help increase donations of these

16  precious gifts of life, and

17         WHEREAS, in conjunction with the Florida Coalition on

18  Donation, the Minority Organ Tissue Transplant Education

19  Program, the Transplant Recipients International Organization,

20  the Marrow Donor Program, and the National Kidney Foundation,

21  community-based efforts are continuously being made to educate

22  and encourage contributions of these "gifts that keep on

23  giving," and

24         WHEREAS, much of the success behind Florida's leading

25  the nation in transplantation is through its partnerships with

26  hospitals and organ, tissue, and eye procurement

27  organizations, and

28         WHEREAS, through the support and cooperation of a

29  concerned populace, the list of more than 60,000 individuals

30  nationally who are awaiting a life-saving or life-enhancing

31  transplant can be sharply reduced or eliminated entirely, and

  1         WHEREAS, the generosity of Floridians alone is

  2  sufficient to reduce the waiting list of over 1,200

  3  individuals in this state who are in need of a transplant,

  4  NOW, THEREFORE,

  6  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

  7

  8         That the Florida Senate pauses in its deliberations to

  9  recognize the week of April 18-24, 1999, as National Organ and

10  Tissue Donor Awareness Week and to encourage all citizens to

11  register as organ and tissue donors.
