  1                    Senate Resolution No.     

  2         A resolution commending the Florida Commission

  3         on Human Relations for contributions to this

  4         state.

  5

  6         WHEREAS, the 1969 Florida Legislature enacted the Human

  7  Rights Act, which established the Florida Commission on Human

  8  Relations for the purpose of enforcing Florida's

  9  anti-discrimination laws, and

10         WHEREAS, state and federal laws have expanded the

11  jurisdiction of the commission to prohibit discrimination in

12  housing, employment, public lodging, food service

13  establishments, and private clubs because of race, color,

14  religion, sex, handicap, national origin, or marital status,

15  and

16         WHEREAS, in the area of housing, discrimination is

17  prohibited due to familial status, and

18         WHEREAS, 30 years of progress have now been achieved by

19  the Florida Commission on Human Relations, and this progress

20  is being celebrated in 1999 with a 30th Anniversary Jubilee,

21  and

22         WHEREAS, the commission's mission is to promote and

23  encourage fair treatment of and equal access to opportunities

24  for all citizens of Florida and to promote mutual

25  understanding and respect among all Floridians by reducing

26  intolerance, antagonism, and intergroup tension through

27  education, legislation, and enhancement of public awareness,

28  and

29         WHEREAS, as we approach the new millennium, more people

30  share neighborhoods, work, school, and social relationships

31  across racial and cultural lines than ever before, and

  1         WHEREAS, despite our progress, prejudice persists, and

  2         WHEREAS, the commission, as an advocate of human

  3  rights, will continue to join hands with advocates throughout

  4  our state to rededicate itself to the spirit of freedom,

  5  justice, and equality that initiated the passage of the

  6  establishing legislation 30 years ago, NOW, THEREFORE,

  7

  8  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

  9

10         That the Florida Commission on Human Relations is

11  commended for its outstanding accomplishments in promoting

12  human rights and eliminating discrimination as it celebrates

13  three historic decades of moving this state ever closer to the

14  goal of "One Florida."
