  1                      A bill to be entitled

  2         An act relating to the designation of highways;

  3         designating various highways in the state as

  4         the "Lawton Chiles Trail"; directing the

  5         Department of Transportation to erect markers;

  6         providing an effective date.

  8         WHEREAS, Lawton Chiles was the 41st Governor of

  9  Florida, and

10         WHEREAS, Lawton Chiles served the people of Florida in

11  the State Legislature, the United States Senate, and as

12  Governor with incredible distinction, honor, humility, and

13  character, and

14         WHEREAS, Lawton Chiles, walked 1,033 miles in 91 days

15  from Century, Florida, to Key Largo, Florida, as part of his

16  1970 campaign to represent this state in the United States

17  Senate, and

18         WHEREAS, following his walk across the length and

19  breadth of the state, Lawton Chiles was known as "Walkin'

20  Lawton," and

21         WHEREAS, the Legislature wishes to commemorate the

22  memory of former Governor Lawton Chiles, who passed away on

23  December 12, 1998, by designating the roadways upon which he

24  walked during his 1970 campaign as the "Lawton Chiles Trail,"

25  NOW, THEREFORE,

27  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

28

29         Section 1.  (1)  The following roadways and portions of

30  roadways are designated as the "Lawton Chiles Trail:"

31         (a)  Century to Tallahassee, consisting of:

  1         1.  That portion of Highway 4 between the intersection

  2  at Highway 29 and the intersection at Highway 90.

  3         2.  That portion of Highway 90 between the intersection

  4  at Highway 4 and Tallahassee.

  5         (b)  Tallahassee to Monticello, consisting of that

  6  portion of Highway 90 between Tallahassee and Monticello.

  7         (c)  Monticello to Live Oak, consisting of that portion

  8  of Highway 90 between Monticello and Live Oak.

  9         (d)  Live Oak to Lake Butler, consisting of:

10         1.  That portion of Highway 90 between Live Oak and

11  Lake City.

12         2.  That portion of Highway 100 between Lake City and

13  Lake Butler.

14         (e)  Lake Butler to Ocala, consisting of:

15         1.  That portion of Highway 100 between Lake Butler and

16  Starke.

17         2.  That portion of Highway 301 between Starke and

18  Waldo.

19         3.  That portion of Highway 24 between Waldo and

20  Gainesville.

21         4.  That portion of Highway 441 between Gainesville and

22  Ocala.

23         (f)  Ocala to Sanford, consisting of:

24         1.  That portion of Highway 40 between Ocala and

25  Barberville.

26         2.  That portion of Highway 17 between Barberville and

27  DeLand.

28         3.  That portion of Highway 92 between DeLand and

29  Daytona Beach.

30         4.  That portion of Highway U.S. 1 between Daytona

31  Beach and New Smyrna Beach.

  3         6.  That portion of Highway 415 between Samsula and

  5         (g)  Sanford to Orlando, consisting of that portion of

  6  Highways 17 and 92 between Sanford and Orlando.

  7         (h)  Orlando to St. Petersburg, consisting of:

  8         1.  That portion of Highways 17 and 92 between Orlando

  9  and Tampa.

10         2.  The Gandy Bridge into St. Petersburg.

11         (i)  St. Petersburg to Fort Myers, consisting of:

12         1.  That portion of Highway 618 between the Gandy

13  Bridge and the intersection at Highway 41.

14         2.  That portion of Highway 41 between the intersection

15  at Highway 618 and the intersection at Highway 776.

16         3.  That portion of Highway 776 between the

17  intersection at Highway 41 and Englewood.

18         4.  That portion of Highway 776 between Englewood and

19  Highway 41.

20         5.  That portion of Highway 41 between Englewood and

21  Fort Myers.

22         (j)  Fort Myers to West Palm Beach, consisting of:

23         1.  That portion of Highway 80 between Fort Myers and

24  the intersection at Highway 27.

25         2.  That portion of Highway 27 between the intersection

26  at Highway 80 and Belle Glade.

27         3.  That portion of Highway 441 between Belle Glade and

28  Highway 98.

29         4.  That portion of Highway 98 between the intersection

30  at Highway 441 and the intersection at Highway 80.

  1         5.  That portion of Highway 80 between the intersection

  2  at Highway 98 and the intersection at Highway U.S. 1.

  3         (k)  West Palm Beach to Key Largo, consisting of that

  4  portion of Highway U.S. 1 between West Palm Beach and Key

  5  Largo, including that portion of Highway 838 that connects

  6  sections of Highway U.S. 1 in Fort Lauderdale.

  7         (2)  The Department of Transportation shall erect

  8  suitable markers designating the "Lawton Chiles Trail" as

  9  described in subsection (1).

10         Section 2.  This act shall take effect upon becoming a

11  law.
