  1                      A bill to be entitled

  2         An act relating to courses of study; amending

  3         s. 233.061, F.S.; requiring instruction in

  4         public schools regarding the sacrifices made by

  5         veterans; providing an effective date.

  7  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

  8

  9         Section 1.  Paragraph (r) is added to subsection (2) of

10  section 233.061, Florida Statutes, to read:

11         233.061  Required instruction.--

12         (2)  Members of the instructional staff of the public

13  schools, subject to the rules and regulations of the

14  commissioner, the state board, and the school board, shall

15  teach efficiently and faithfully, using the books and

16  materials required, following the prescribed courses of study,

17  and employing approved methods of instruction, the following:

18         (r)  In order to encourage patriotism, the sacrifices

19  that veterans have made in serving our country and protecting

20  democratic values worldwide. Such instruction must occur on or

21  before Veterans' Day and Memorial Day. Members of the

22  instructional staff are encouraged to use the assistance of

23  local veterans when practicable.

24         Section 2.  This act shall take effect upon becoming a

25  law.
