  1                    Senate Resolution No.     

  2         A resolution recognizing July 1-7, 2000, as

  3         Merit Shop Construction Week in Florida.

  4

  5         WHEREAS, the construction industry employs more than

  6  348,000 workers and is the fourth largest industry in this

  7  state, and

  8         WHEREAS, total employment in the construction industry

  9  is more than double the cumulative employment in agriculture,

10  forestry, and fishing, and

11         WHEREAS, merit shop construction has a record of higher

12  workplace safety and lower fatality rates than union shops and

13  the industry average, and

14         WHEREAS, the construction industry creates $1.12 of

15  additional economic activity for each dollar spent on

16  construction, and

17         WHEREAS, building permits provide $14 billion in tax

18  revenue in this state, and

19         WHEREAS, 5.42 percent of the total state sales tax in

20  this state is contributed by the building and construction

21  industry, and

22         WHEREAS, 98 percent of all construction in this state

23  is done by merit shop craftsmen, NOW, THEREFORE,

25  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

27         That July 1-7, 2000, is recognized as Merit Shop

28  Construction Week in Florida.
