  1                      A bill to be entitled

  2         An act relating to campaign financing; amending

  3         s. 106.09, F.S.; increasing penalties for

  4         making certain illegal campaign contributions;

  5         providing an effective date.

  7  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

  9         Section 1.  Section 106.09, Florida Statutes, is

10  amended to read:

11         106.09  Cash contributions and contribution by

12  cashier's checks.--

13         (1)  A No person may not shall make or accept a cash

14  contribution or contribution by means of a cashier's check in

15  excess of $100.

16         (2)(a)  Any person who knowingly and willfully makes or

17  accepts a contribution in an amount of more than $5,000 in

18  violation of this section is guilty of a felony of the third

19  degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082, s. 775.083, or

20  s. 775.084.

21         (b)  Any person who makes or accepts a contribution in

22  an amount more than $100 but not more than $5,000 in violation

23  of this section is guilty of a misdemeanor of the first

24  degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082 or s. 775.083.

25         Section 2.  This act shall take effect July 1, 2000.
