13         Amendment (with title amendment) 

14         On page 1, line 28, through page 2, line 16,

15  remove from the bill:  all of said lines

17  and insert in lieu thereof:

18         (2)  Cross-examination of a witness is limited to the

19  subject matter of the direct examination and matters affecting

20  the credibility of the witness. The court may, in its

21  discretion, permit inquiry into additional matters.

22         (3)  Leading questions should not be used on the direct

23  examination of a witness except as may be necessary to develop

24  the witness's testimony.  Ordinarily, leading questions should

25  be permitted on cross-examination.  When a party calls a

26  hostile witness, an adverse party, or a witness identified

27  with an adverse party, interrogation may be by leading

28  questions.

30  The judge shall take special care to protect a witness under

31  age 14 from questions that are in a form that cannot

  3  restrict the unnecessary repetition of questions.

  7  And the title is amended as follows:

  8         On page 1, lines 4-12,

  9  remove from the title of the bill:  all of said lines

11  and insert in lieu thereof:

12         witness under a specific age during

13         interrogation and to restrict unnecessary

14         repetition of questions; requiring that

15         questions be stated in a form appropriate to

16         the age and understanding of the witness;

17         providing an effective date.
