  1                    Senate Resolution No. ____

  2         A resolution honoring and expressing

  3         condolences upon the death of Officer Scott M.

  4         Baird of the Gainesville Police Department.

  5

  6         WHEREAS, Officer Scott M. Baird of the Gainesville

  7  Police Department was killed in the line of duty after being

  8  struck by a vehicle while attempting to remove an obstruction

  9  that had been left in a roadway as a prank on February 12,

10  2001, and

11         WHEREAS, Officer Scott M. Baird was 23 years old and a

12  1-year veteran of the Gainesville Police Department at the

13  time of his untimely death, and

14         WHEREAS, Officer Scott M. Baird in his short lifetime

15  was living his dream of having a career in law enforcement and

16  in doing so touched the lives of everyone with whom he came in

17  contact, and

18         WHEREAS, Officer Scott M. Baird made the ultimate

19  sacrifice to ensure the safety of the public, and

20         WHEREAS, Officer Scott M. Baird's death should serve as

21  a reminder of the tragic consequences that can result from

22  unthinking actions that endanger innocent other persons, NOW,

23  THEREFORE,

25  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

26

27         That this legislative body does pause in its

28  deliberations to pay its respects to Officer Scott M. Baird

29  and that the Florida Senate in session assembled does hereby

30  record this testimonial of condolences and bereavement:

  1                          SCOTT M. BAIRD

  2         Scott M. Baird was born in West Palm Beach and raised

  3  in Ocala, Florida, was educated in the public school system,

  4  attended Santa Fe Community College and the University of

  5  Florida, and served the public as a police officer with the

  6  Gainesville, Florida Police Department. His untimely death

  7  prevented him from fulfilling his lifelong dream of becoming

  8  an agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He is

  9  survived by his father, Walter Baird, III, of Orlando,

10  Florida; his mother, Mrs. Kelly Gaudet, of Bellview, Florida;

11  a brother, Walter Baird, IV, of Ocala, Florida; and a sister,

12  Krista Baird, of Bellview, Florida.

13         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution,

14  signed by the President of the Senate, with the Seal of the

15  Florida Senate affixed, be transmitted to Walter Baird, III,

16  and Mrs. Kelly Gaudet, the parents of Scott M. Baird, as a

17  tangible and lasting symbol of the sentiments of the Florida

18  Senate.
