  1                    Senate Resolution No. ____

  2         A resolution recognizing the month of April

  3         2001, as Child Abuse Prevention Month.

  4

  5         WHEREAS, 85,644 children in Florida were identified as

  6  having been abused or neglected in reports closed during

  7  fiscal year 1999-2000, and

  8         WHEREAS, in 1998, 82 children died as a result of a

  9  verified finding of abuse or neglect and an additional 39

10  deaths showed some indication of abuse or neglect, and

11         WHEREAS, child abuse and neglect causes significant

12  trauma to the abused child and society, inflicting upon

13  children serious illness and injury resulting in physical,

14  intellectual, and emotional impairment, or death, and

15         WHEREAS, abused or neglected children are at much

16  greater risk of becoming abusive or neglectful parents, and

17         WHEREAS, prevention services can reduce the costs

18  society must bear in dealing with the results of child abuse

19  and neglect and can help children and families avoid the

20  overburdened and expensive social welfare and criminal justice

21  systems, and

22         WHEREAS, children deserve the opportunity to grow and

23  thrive in healthful environments, free from threats of

24  violence and harm, and

25         WHEREAS, during the month of April, public and

26  private-sector agencies, child care professionals, child

27  advocates, and residents will be increasing the public's

28  awareness of child abuse and neglect prevention, NOW,

29  THEREFORE,

31  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

  1         That the Florida Senate recognizes April 2001, as Child

  2  Abuse Prevention Month.

  3         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Florida Senate urges

  4  the participation and support of all persons in making a

  5  conscious effort to prevent child abuse.
