11  The Committee on Transportation offered the following:

13         Amendment (with title amendment) 
14         On page 9, between lines 15 and 16,
15  
16  insert:  Subsection (31) of section 334.044, Florida Statutes,
17  is created to read:
18         334.044 Department; powers and duties.--The department
19  shall have the following general powers and duties:
20         (31)  In order to fulfill the department's mission to
21  provide a safe and efficient transportation system, the
22  department's Office of Motor Carrier Compliance may employ
23  sworn law enforcement officers, certified in accordance with
24  chapter 943 to enforce the traffic and criminal laws of this
25  state.  Such officers shall have full law enforcement powers
26  granted to other peace officers of this state including making
27  arrests, carrying firearms, serving court process, and seizing
28  contraband and the proceeds of illegal activities.  Officers
29  appointed under this section have the primary responsibility
30  for enforcing laws relating to size and weight of commercial
31  motor vehicles; safety, traffic, tax and registration of

 1  commercial motor vehicles; contraband interdiction; and
 2  violations that threaten the overall security and safety of
 3  Florida's transportation infrastructure and the motoring
 4  public.  The office is also authorized to appoint part-time
 5  and/or auxiliary law enforcement officers pursuant to chapter
 6  943 and to provide compensation in accordance with law.
