  1                      A bill to be entitled

  2         An act relating to high school graduation

  3         requirements; amending s. 232.246, F.S.;

  4         providing for the award of a standard high

  5         school diploma to certain Korean War Veterans;

  6         providing an effective date.

  8  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

10         Section 1.  Subsection (11) of section 232.246, Florida

11  Statutes, is amended to read:

12         232.246  General requirements for high school

13  graduation.--

14         (11)  The Commissioner of Education may award a

15  standard high school diploma to honorably discharged veterans

16  who were scheduled to graduate from high school but were

17  inducted into the United States Armed Forces and served during

18  the Korean War prior to completing the necessary high school

19  graduation requirements or to veterans who started high school

20  between 1937 and 1946 and were scheduled to graduate between

21  1941 and 1950 but were inducted into the United States Armed

22  Forces between September 16, 1940, and December 31, 1946,

23  prior to completing the necessary high school graduation

24  requirements. Upon the recommendation of the commissioner, the

25  State Board of Education may develop criteria and guidelines

26  for awarding such diplomas.

27         Section 2.  This act shall take effect July 1, 2002.
