13         Amendment (with title amendment) 

14         On page 2, between lines 12 & 13, of the bill

15

16  insert:

17         Section 2.  Section 233.062, Florida Statutes, is

18  amended to read:

19         233.062  Permitting study of the Bible and religion;

20  permitting brief meditation period; display of motto.--

21         (1)  The school board may install in the public schools

22  in the district a secular program of education including, but

23  not limited to, an objective study of the Bible and of

24  religion.

25         (2)  The school board may provide that a brief period,

26  not to exceed 2 minutes, for the purpose of silent prayer or

27  meditation be set aside at the start of each school day or

28  each school week in the public schools in the district.

29         (3)  The superintendent of schools in each school

30  district shall provide for the display in a prominent location

31  within each school under his or her supervision of the motto

11                      A bill to be entitled

12         An act relating to public schools; creating s.

13         233.0659, F.S.; requiring Celebrate Freedom

14         Week to be recognized in the public schools

15         each September; requiring a portion of the

16         Declaration of Independence to be recited daily

17         by students during that week; providing for

18         excusal of a student from performing the

19         required recitation; amending s. 233.062, F.S.;

20         directing the superintendent of schools to

21         provide for the display of the motto "IN GOD WE

22         TRUST" in a prominent location in public

23         schools; providing an effective date.
