17 Section 2. Health insurance coverage for autism
18 spectrum disorder.--
19 (1)(a) As used in this section, the term "autism
20 spectrum disorder" means a neurobiological condition that
21 includes autism, Asperger syndrome, and Rett's syndrome.
22 (b) Any health insurer or health maintenance
23 organization that issues major medical expense coverage in
24 this state may not exclude coverage prescribed by the
25 referring physician for the treatment of autism spectrum
26 disorder, including, but not limited to, coverage for
27 therapeutic evaluations and interventions, such as speech
28 therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, intensive
29 early intervention, applied behavioral analysis, and
30 behavioral therapy.
31 (2) Coverage for autism spectrum disorder is subject

1 to the same terms and conditions that the insurer or health
2 maintenance organization applies to the treatment of other
3 disorders. However, an insurer or health maintenance
4 organization may confirm a diagnosis or review the
5 appropriateness of a specific treatment plan in order to
6 ensure that coverage under this section is limited to
7 diagnostic and treatment services.
8 (3) This section does not affect the scope of
9 licensure of any health care professional and does not impair
10 any right to reimbursement that is otherwise guaranteed to a
11 health care provider.
12 Section 3. The Legislature finds that the provisions
13 of this act fulfill an important state interest.

18 On page 1, line 22, after the semicolon,

20 insert:
21 requiring certain health insurers or health
22 maintenance organizations to include coverage
23 for treating autism spectrum disorder;
24 providing a definition; authorizing an insurer
25 or health maintenance organization to confirm a
26 diagnosis or review the appropriateness of a
27 treatment plan; providing that the act does not
28 affect the licensure of a health care
29 professional or impair the right to
30 reimbursement of a health care provider;
31 providing a legislative finding of important
