11  The Committee on Local Government & Veterans Affairs offered

14         Amendment 

15         On page 11, lines 10 through 17,

16  remove:  all of said lines

17

18  and insert:

19         Section 4.  Construction.--This act shall be construed

20  as remedial and shall be liberally construed to promote the

21  purpose for which it is intended.

22         Section 5.  Effect.--In the event that any part of this

23  act should be held void for any reason, such holding shall not

24  affect any other part thereof.

25         Section 6.  Repeal of prior special acts.--Chapter

26  2000-391, Laws of Florida, is repealed.

27         Section 7.  Paragraph (a) of subsection (1) of section

28  1 of chapter 93-352, Laws of Florida, as amended by chapter

29  94-373, Laws of Florida, is restated to read:

  1         fire commissioners; membership.

  2

  3         (1)(a)  The business affairs of the Cedar

  4         Hammock Fire Control District, Parrish Fire

  5         Control District, Southern Manatee Fire and

  6         Rescue District, Trailer Estates Fire Control

  7         District, Westside Fire Control District, and

  8         Whitfield Fire Control District in Manatee

  9         County shall each be conducted and administered

10         by a five-member board of fire commissioners

11         that is elected by the electors of the

12         respective district in a nonpartisan election

13         held at the time and in the manner prescribed

14         for holding general elections in section

15         189.405(2)(a), Florida Statutes.  Each member

16         of a district board shall be elected for a term

17         of 4 years and shall serve until his successor

18         is chosen and qualified, except that members

19         elected to seats 2 and 4 in the first election

20         held after the effective date of this act shall

21         be elected for a term of 2 years.

23         Section 8.  This act shall take effect upon becoming a

24  law.
