  1                    Senate Resolution No. ____

  2         A resolution recognizing April 10, 2003, as

  3         Polk County Legislative Day in Tallahassee.

  4

  5         WHEREAS, Polk County encompasses 17 municipalities in

  6  the heart of Central Florida across 2,010 square miles of land

  7  dotted with more than 554 freshwater lakes and lush nature

  8  preserves featuring rare and exotic wildlife, rolling hills,

  9  sparkling rivers, beautiful savannas, and pinewood forests,

10  and

11         WHEREAS, Polk County's population is 502,000 persons

12  who reside in an area the size of the State of Delaware and is

13  a population center for the State of Florida, with more than

14  7.5 million people living within a 100-mile radius of our

15  inland community, and

16         WHEREAS, Polk County is known for its historic charm

17  and small-town atmosphere, blended with its largely

18  undiscovered and unspoiled natural surroundings, and

19         WHEREAS, the vacation destinations of Polk County are

20  visited by more than 1.5 million tourists annually and include

21  Cypress Gardens, Historic Bok Sanctuary, Hollis Gardens,

22  Fantasy of Flight, and the Frank Lloyd Wright architecture at

23  Florida Southern College, and

24         WHEREAS, Polk County's Lake Wales Ridge has the

25  distinction of being Florida's original beach-front property

26  and features more than 50 species of endangered, threatened,

27  rare, or special-concern wildlife, and

28         WHEREAS, Polk County, has been deemed the Largemouth

29  Bass Fishing Capital of the World for its wonderful fishing in

30  numerous undeveloped lakes as well as, Winter Haven's chain of

31  14 lakes connected by well-established canals, and

  1         WHEREAS, Polk County is home to the Detroit Tigers and

  2  the Cleveland Indians during spring training season, and

  3         WHEREAS, Polk County is the center of citrus production

  4  and phosphate mining for the world, and

  5         WHEREAS, Polk County is the corporate headquarters for

  6  Publix Super Markets, the largest private company in the

  7  state, employing more than 125,000 persons, and is also home

  8  to the W.S. Badcock Corporation, which has been located in

  9  Mulberry since 1904, and

10         WHEREAS, Polk County has been home to some of the

11  state's leading Legislators and former Governor Lawton Chiles,

12  NOW, THEREFORE,

14  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

15

16         That the Florida Senate recognizes April 10, 2003, as

17  Polk County Legislative Day in Tallahassee.
