  1                      A bill to be entitled

  2         An act relating to school speed zones; amending

  3         s. 316.1895, F.S.; providing for the use of

  4         described flashing beacons to designate school

  5         zone speed restrictions; revising requirements

  6         for the Department of Transportation to

  7         establish certain standards; providing an

  8         effective date.

10  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

11  

12         Section 1.  Subsections (6) and (8) of section

13  316.1895, Florida Statutes, are amended to read:

14         316.1895  Establishment of school speed zones,

15  enforcement; designation.--

16         (6)  Permanent signs designating school zones and

17  school zone speed limits shall be uniform in size and color,

18  and shall have the times during which the restrictive speed

19  limit is enforced clearly designated thereon. Flashing beacons

20  activated by a time clock, or other automatic device, or

21  manually activated may be used as an alternative to posting

22  the times during which the restrictive school speed limit is

23  enforced. The Department of Transportation shall establish

24  adequate standards for the signs and flashing beacons.

25         (8)  Nothing herein shall prohibit the use of automatic

26  traffic control devices for the control of vehicular and

27  pedestrian traffic at school crossings in lieu of permanent or

28  portable school zone signs. The Department of Transportation

29  shall establish standards for automatic flashing signals.

30         Section 2.  This act shall take effect upon becoming a

31  law.

 4  The committee substitute allows manually activated flashing
    beacons to be used an alternative to posting the times during
 5  which the restrictive school speed limit is enforced.
