  1                    Senate Resolution No. ____

  2         A resolution recognizing February 6 as Ronald

  3         Reagan Day in the State of Florida.

  4  

  5         WHEREAS, Ronald Wilson Reagan, a man of humble

  6  beginnings, was born in Tampico, Illinois, on February 6,

  7  1911, and worked throughout his life serving the interests of

  8  freedom to advance the public good, as soldier, entertainer,

  9  union leader, corporate sponsor, Governor of California, and,

10  finally, as President of the United States of America, and

11         WHEREAS, Mr. Reagan was elected in November, 1980, to

12  serve as the 40th President of the United States for two

13  consecutive 4-year terms, the first of which began January 20,

14  1981, and the second of which began January 20, 1985, and

15  ended January 20, 1989, and

16         WHEREAS, when he was reelected in 1984 to serve his

17  second term of office as President of the United States, Mr.

18  Reagan received more than 60 percent of the popular votes cast

19  by the electorate, and 525 of the 538 electoral college votes

20  cast, winning the election in 49 of the 50 states, a record

21  unsurpassed in the history of presidential elections in the

22  United States, and

23         WHEREAS, when Mr. Reagan was elected to serve his

24  initial term of office as President of the United States, the

25  nation was experiencing rampant inflation and high

26  unemployment, and

27         WHEREAS, throughout his presidency, Mr. Reagan worked

28  in a bipartisan manner with other leaders in government and in

29  the private sector to develop and implement policies for

30  restoring accountability and common-sense to the operation of

31  government at every level, promoting individual freedom to

 1  exercise fundamental human rights, equality of opportunity for

 2  all people, economic prosperity, and world peace, and

 3         WHEREAS, Mr. Reagan's development and implementation of

 4  policies aimed at ensuring government accountability and

 5  stimulation of economic growth resulted in the downsizing and

 6  simplification of government operations and in unprecedented

 7  increases in economic expansion and prosperity for the

 8  citizens of the United States, and

 9         WHEREAS, Mr. Reagan's development and implementation of

10  social policies aimed at establishing and maintaining the

11  well-being of children resulted in lowering the incidence of

12  crime and the use of illicit drugs in our nation's

13  neighborhoods, and

14         WHEREAS, Mr. Reagan's development and implementation of

15  policies aimed at enhancing and strengthening our systems of

16  defense prepared our armed forces for success in deterring

17  Iraq's invasion of Kuwait and victory in the Gulf War, and

18         WHEREAS, Mr. Reagan's development and implementation of

19  policies aimed at achieving "peace through strength"

20  precipitated the end of the Cold War, the demise of the Berlin

21  Wall, and normalization of relations among the Soviet Union,

22  the United States, and the rest of the free world, and

23         WHEREAS, Mr. Reagan's presidential leadership was

24  characterized by development and implementation of policies

25  predicated on the values and principles that guided our

26  forefathers in founding and developing the United States of

27  America as "one nation under God, indivisible, with freedom

28  and justice for all," and

29         WHEREAS, Mr. Reagan's legacy to our nation and the

30  world is one of outstanding statesmanship exemplary of

31  responsible governance consistent with the precepts of

 1  democratic institutions to ensure government accountability,

 2  the preeminence of individual freedom to exercise fundamental

 3  human rights, equality of opportunity for all people, economic

 4  prosperity, and world peace, and

 5         WHEREAS, Mr. Reagan will be 92 years of age on February

 6  6, 2003, NOW, THEREFORE,

 7  

 8  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

 9  

10         That the Florida Senate recognizes and observes

11  February 6, 2003, and all subsequent annual anniversaries of

12  this date as "Ronald Reagan Day" in the State of Florida.

13         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution,

14  with the Seal of the Florida Senate affixed, be presented to

15  the Ronald Reagan Legacy Project as a tangible token of the

16  sentiments of the Florida Senate.
