2	A resolution designating March 27, 2003, "Florida Doctors'
3	Day."

5	WHEREAS, first observed in 1933 by a group of physicians'
6	spouses in Winder, Georgia, Doctors' Day also commemorates the
7	first administration of anesthesia by a physician in 1842, and
8	WHEREAS, recognizing that most physicians endure long,
9	unpredictable hours and many must cope with the conflicting
10	demands of work and family life, President George Bush in 1990
11	designated an official day in recognition of physicians, and
12	WHEREAS, physicians daily devote their lives to the care of
13	citizens in the great State of Florida and make unique, special
14	contributions to its society and culture, and
15	WHEREAS, Doctors' Day provides an opportunity for
16	physicians and patients to set aside the distractions of today's
17	often contentious health care environment and focus on the
18	"extraordinary calling of medicine,” and
19	WHEREAS, the mission of the Florida Medical Association is
20	“to serve as an advocate for physicians and their patients to
21	promote the public health, to ensure high standards in medical
22	education and ethics, and to enhance the quality and
23	availability of health care," and
24	WHEREAS, the Florida Medical Association has sponsored the
25	"Doctor of the Day" program for many years, providing a
26	volunteer physician every day of the regular legislative
27	session, in both the Florida House of Representatives and the
28	Florida Senate, to attend Legislators, staff, and others in the
29	Capitol who may require medical services, and
30	WHEREAS, over the years, the red carnation has become the
31	symbol of Doctors' Day, denoting the qualities of love,
32	sacrifice, and courage, and is today being worn by physicians
33	and their spouses who are visiting the Capitol, NOW, THEREFORE,

35	Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
36	Florida:

38	That the House of Representatives applaud the state's
39	devoted medical professionals and designate March 27, 2003,
40	"Florida Doctors' Day" in recognition of the selfless service
41	and immense talent of Florida’s physicians.
