  1                      A bill to be entitled

  2         An act relating to highway designations;

  3         designating the Old Gandy access road from

  4         Gandy Boulevard to the Friendship Trail Bridge

  5         as "Andrew J. Aviles Trail"; directing the

  6         Department of Transportation to erect suitable

  7         markers; providing an effective date.

  8  

  9         WHEREAS, Andrew J. Aviles was a popular and talented

10  2002 graduate of T.R. Robinson High School in Tampa, Florida,

11  who led the student body not only as the Student Government

12  President, but by example of character and citizenship as

13  well; and who was a cheerleader, wrestler, active in the

14  National Junior ROTC program, a National Honor Society member,

15  a Tampa Tribune Scholar, graduated third in his class, and had

16  been awarded a full scholarship to Florida State University,

17  and

18         WHEREAS, Andrew delayed his college education to answer

19  the call of duty and serve as a Lance Corporal in the U.S.

20  Marine Corps Reserve as a member of the 4th Assault Amphibian

21  Battalion based in Tampa, and

22         WHEREAS, Lance Corporal Aviles was killed in the line

23  of duty in Iraq on April 7, 2003, while securing a bridge

24  during Operation Iraqi Freedom, and

25         WHEREAS, Lance Corporal Aviles was laid to rest on June

26  19, 2003, at Arlington National Cemetery with full military

27  honors, and

28         WHEREAS, Lance Corporal Aviles was posthumously

29  decorated with a Purple Heart and the Navy and Marine Corps

30  Achievement Medal for Superior Performance in the Line of

31  Duty, and

 1         WHEREAS, Lance Corporal Aviles will forever be

 2  remembered as a role model and inspiration to all for his

 3  outstanding achievements during his short life; his love and

 4  devotion to his family, friends, and his country; and for the

 5  ultimate sacrifice he made, NOW, THEREFORE,

 6  

 7  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

 8  

 9         Section 1.  Andrew J. Aviles Trail designated;

10  department to erect suitable markers.--

11         (1)  The Old Gandy access road from Gandy Boulevard to

12  the Friendship Trail Bridge is designated as "Andrew J. Aviles

13  Trail."

14         (2)  The Department of Transportation is directed to

15  erect suitable markers designating Andrew J. Aviles Trail as

16  described in subsection (1).

17         Section 2.  This act shall take effect July 1, 2004.
