  1                      A bill to be entitled

  2         An act relating to highway designations;

  3         designating the Old Gandy access road in

  4         Hillsborough County from Gandy Boulevard to the

  5         Friendship Trail Bridge as "Andrew J. Aviles

  6         Trail"; directing the Department of

  7         Transportation to erect suitable markers;

  8         providing an effective date.

  9  

10         WHEREAS, Andrew J. Aviles was a popular and talented

11  2002 graduate of T.R. Robinson High School in Tampa, Florida,

12  who led the student body not only as the Student Government

13  President, but by example of character and citizenship as

14  well; and who was a cheerleader, wrestler, active in the

15  National Junior ROTC program, a National Honor Society member,

16  a Tampa Tribune Scholar, graduated third in his class, and had

17  been awarded a full scholarship to Florida State University,

18  and

19         WHEREAS, Andrew delayed his college education to answer

20  the call of duty and serve as a Lance Corporal in the U.S.

21  Marine Corps Reserve as a member of the 4th Assault Amphibian

22  Battalion based in Tampa, and

23         WHEREAS, Lance Corporal Aviles was killed in the line

24  of duty in Iraq on April 7, 2003, while securing a bridge

25  during Operation Iraqi Freedom, and

26         WHEREAS, Lance Corporal Aviles was laid to rest on June

27  19, 2003, at Arlington National Cemetery with full military

28  honors, and

29         WHEREAS, Lance Corporal Aviles was posthumously

30  decorated with a Purple Heart and the Navy and Marine Corps

 1  Achievement Medal for Superior Performance in the Line of

 2  Duty, and

 3         WHEREAS, Lance Corporal Aviles will forever be

 4  remembered as a role model and inspiration to all for his

 5  outstanding achievements during his short life; his love and

 6  devotion to his family, friends, and his country; and for the

 7  ultimate sacrifice he made, NOW, THEREFORE,

 8  

 9  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

10  

11         Section 1.  Andrew J. Aviles Trail designated;

12  department to erect suitable markers.--

13         (1)  The Old Gandy access road in Hillsborough County

14  from Gandy Boulevard to the Friendship Trail Bridge is

15  designated as "Andrew J. Aviles Trail."

16         (2)  The Department of Transportation is directed to

17  erect suitable markers designating Andrew J. Aviles Trail as

18  described in subsection (1).

19         Section 2.  This act shall take effect July 1, 2004.
