| 1 | A bill to be entitled | ||
| 2 | An act relating to high school graduation options; | ||
| 3 | amending s. 1003.429, F.S.; revising credit requirements | ||
| 4 | for the accelerated high school graduation career | ||
| 5 | preparatory program; providing an effective date. | ||

| 7 | Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida: | ||
| 8 | |||
| 9 | Section 1. Subsection (1) of section 1003.429, Florida | ||
| 10 | Statutes, is amended to read: | ||
| 11 | 1003.429 Accelerated high school graduation options.-- | ||
| 12 | (1) Beginning with the 2003-2004 school year, all students | ||
| 13 | scheduled to graduate in 2004 and thereafter may select one of | ||
| 14 | the following three high school graduation options: | ||
| 15 | (a) Completion of the general requirements for high school | ||
| 16 | graduation pursuant to s. 1003.43; | ||
| 17 | (b) Completion of a 3-year standard college preparatory | ||
| 18 | program requiring successful completion of a minimum of 18 | ||
| 19 | academic credits in grades 9 through 12. The 18 credits shall be | ||
| 20 | primary requirements and shall be distributed as follows: | ||
| 21 | 1. Four credits in English, with major concentration in | ||
| 22 | composition and literature; | ||
| 23 | 2. Three credits in mathematics at the Algebra I level or | ||
| 24 | higher from the list of courses that qualify for state | ||
| 25 | university admission; | ||
| 26 | 3. Three credits in natural science, two of which must | ||
| 27 | have a laboratory component; | ||
| 28 | 4. Three credits in social sciences; | ||
| 29 | 5. Two credits in the same second language unless the | ||
| 30 | student is a native speaker of or can otherwise demonstrate | ||
| 31 | competency in a language other than English. If the student | ||
| 32 | demonstrates competency in another language, the student may | ||
| 33 | replace the language requirement with two credits in other | ||
| 34 | academic courses; and | ||
| 35 | 6. Three credits in electives; or | ||
| 36 | (c) Completion of a 3-year career preparatory program | ||
| 37 | requiring successful completion of a minimum of 18 academic | ||
| 38 | credits in grades 9 through 12. The 18 credits shall be primary | ||
| 39 | requirements and shall be distributed as follows: | ||
| 40 | 1. Four credits in English, with major concentration in | ||
| 41 | composition and literature; | ||
| 42 | 2. Three credits in mathematics, one of which must be | ||
| 43 | Algebra I; | ||
| 44 | 3. Three credits in natural science, two of which must | ||
| 45 | have a laboratory component; | ||
| 46 | 4. Three credits in social sciences; | ||
| 47 | 5. Two credits in the same second language unless the | ||
| 48 | student is a native speaker of or can otherwise demonstrate | ||
| 49 | competency in a language other than English. If the student | ||
| 50 | demonstrates competency in another language, the student may | ||
| 51 | replace the language requirement with two credits in other | ||
| 52 | academic courses. For students scheduled to graduate in 2007 and | ||
| 53 | thereafter, two credits in the same second language or two | ||
| 54 | credits in vocational education, one credit of which may be a | ||
| 55 | career class, shall be required; and | ||
| 56 | 6. Three credits in electives. For students scheduled to | ||
| 57 | graduate in 2007 and thereafter, three elective credits in a | ||
| 58 | vocational program of study shall be required. | ||
| 59 | Section 2. This act shall take effect July 1, 2004. | ||
