  1                    Senate Resolution No. ____

  2         A resolution recognizing the 40th Anniversary

  3         of the Civil Rights Act and the 35th

  4         Anniversary of the Florida Commission on Human

  5         Relations, and commending the Commission on its

  6         many significant accomplishments.

  7  

  8         WHEREAS, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 gave the Federal

  9  Government the right to end segregation, and

10         WHEREAS, the Florida Legislature, pursuant to the Civil

11  Rights Act, established the Florida Commission on Human

12  Relations, and

13         WHEREAS, the Florida Commission on Human Relations

14  promotes freedom from discrimination under the Civil Rights

15  Act, and

16         WHEREAS, the act includes, but is not limited to, the

17  elimination of discrimination based on race, color, religion,

18  gender, national origin, age, handicap, or marital status, and

19         WHEREAS, the Florida Commission on Human Relations

20  works to identify and eliminate discrimination in public

21  lodging, food service establishments, and certain private

22  clubs, and

23         WHEREAS, the Florida Commission on Human Relations

24  promotes and encourages mutual understanding and respect among

25  members of all economic, social, racial, religious, and ethnic

26  groups, and

27         WHEREAS, the Florida Commission on Human Relations

28  endeavors to eliminate discrimination against and antagonism

29  among religious, racial, and ethnic groups, and their members,

 1         WHEREAS, more than 70,000 civil rights investigations

 2  have been closed, more than $15 million has been negotiated

 3  through the Commission's Mediation Unit, and thousands of

 4  Floridians have been impacted through its Commission's

 5  Community Relations Service Unit, and

 6         WHEREAS, the year 2004 marks the 40th Anniversary of

 7  the Civil Rights Act, and the 35th Anniversary of the Florida

 8  Commission on Human Relations, NOW, THEREFORE,

 9  

10  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

11  

12         That the Florida Senate recognizes the 40th Anniversary

13  of the Civil Rights Act and the 35th Anniversary of the

14  Florida Commission on Human Relations and commends the

15  Commission on its energetic work and its many significant

16  accomplishments.
