  1                    Senate Resolution No. ____
  2         A resolution recognizing and commending Omega
  3         Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., for its invaluable
  4         community service to the people of the State of
  5         Florida.

  7         WHEREAS, on November 17, 1911, three Howard University
  8  undergraduate students, assisted by their faculty advisor, met
  9  and conceived the idea of founding Omega Psi Phi Fraternity,
10  Inc., based on the cardinal principles of "manhood,
11  scholarship, perseverance, and uplift," and
12         WHEREAS, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., was the first
13  fraternity founded at a Historically Black College or
14  University, and, since its inception, has initiated more than
15  130,000 members in 550 chapters in 44 states, the District of
16  Columbia, Europe, Asia, Africa, the Bahamas, the Virgin
17  Islands, and Panama, and
18         WHEREAS, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., is committed
19  to rendering community service that makes a difference in
20  quality of life, and has made invaluable contributions toward
21  improving the educational, civic, and social lives of the
22  people it has touched in Florida and throughout the world, and
23         WHEREAS, Brother George H. Grace of Miami, Florida,
24  presently leads Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., serving as the
25  Fraternity's 37th Grand Basileus; Brother Edgar L. Mathis,
26  Sr., of Jacksonville, Florida, is the National Representative
27  for District 7, which includes Florida, Georgia, Alabama, and
28  Mississippi; and Brother Leslie Gamble of Miami, Florida, is
29  the National Representative for the State of Florida, and
30         WHEREAS, other distinguished Floridians who are
31  Brothers of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., include United

 7  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

 9         That the Florida Senate commends Omega Psi Phi
10  Fraternity, Inc., for its invaluable community service to the
11  people of Florida and recognizes April 16, 2004, as Omega Psi
12  Phi Fraternity, Inc., Day in the State of Florida.
13         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution,
14  with the Seal of the Senate affixed, be presented to George H.
15  Grace, Grand Basileus of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., as a
16  tangible token of the sentiments of the Florida Senate.
