  1                    Senate Resolution No. ____

  2         A resolution recognizing April 2004 as Cancer

  3         Control Awareness Month.

  4  

  5         WHEREAS, cancer will strike approximately one out of

  6  two men and about one out of every three women, and

  7         WHEREAS, cancer accounts for one out of every four

  8  deaths, and is second only to heart disease as the leading

  9  cause of death, and

10         WHEREAS, the American Cancer Society estimates that

11  more than 97,000 new cases of cancer in Florida will be

12  diagnosed and more than 40,000 Floridians will die from cancer

13  during 2004, and

14         WHEREAS, many cancers are prevented by lifestyle

15  changes and can be cured if detected early and treated

16  promptly, and

17         WHEREAS, as many as one-third of the cancer deaths

18  expected in Florida this year will be related to poor

19  nutrition, physical inactivity, obesity, and other lifestyle

20  factors, and thus, might have been prevented, and

21         WHEREAS, almost half of all Floridians who continue to

22  smoke may expect to die prematurely from lung cancer or other

23  tobacco-related diseases, and

24         WHEREAS, 30 percent of all cancer deaths and 87 percent

25  of all lung deaths are caused by smoking cigarettes or other

26  tobacco products, and

27         WHEREAS, the 5-year survival rate for all cancers

28  combined is 63 percent, but survival rates may increase

29  significantly for certain cancers such as breast, cervical,

30  and colorectal cancers when they are detected and treated

31  early, and

 1         WHEREAS, rates of cancer incidence and death in Florida

 2  may be significantly reduced with increased awareness of the

 3  American Cancer Society's cancer screening guidelines and

 4  compliance with those screening guidelines, and

 5         WHEREAS, promotion of Cancer Control Awareness Month

 6  and statewide cancer control initiatives, such as the Florida

 7  Dialogue on Cancer sponsored by the American Cancer Society,

 8  may assist Florida in significantly reducing the burden of

 9  cancer Floridians and the state face, NOW, THEREFORE,

10  

11  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

12  

13         That the month of April 2004 is recognized as Cancer

14  Control Awareness Month in Florida and all Floridians are

15  urged to understand the risks associated with cancer, change

16  behaviors that increase cancer risks, and follow the American

17  Cancer Society's cancer screening guidelines.
