11  Senator Wasserman Schultz moved the following amendment:

14         On page 4, line 10, through page 5, line 7, delete
15  those lines
16  
17  and insert:

19  in the waters of the state. The enhanced study shall include
20  an assessment of factors that the commission may use when
21  seeking to provide manatees with the maximum protection
22  possible while considering recreational uses of the state's
23  waterways. An additional goal of the enhanced study is to
24  collect data that will enable resource managers and state and
25  local policymakers, in consultation with the public, to
26  develop and implement sound science-based policies to improve
27  manatee habitat, establish manatee protection zones, and
28  enhance safe boating opportunities without endangering the
29  manatees.
30         (2)(a)  As part of the enhanced manatee protection
31  study, the Legislature intends that the commission shall

SENATE AMENDMENT Bill No. CS for SB 540 Amendment No. ___ Barcode 294146 1 contract with Mote Marine Laboratory to conduct a "Manatee 2 Habitat and Submerged Aquatic Vegetation Assessment" that 3 specifically considers, at a minimum, the following: 4 1. The manatee populations that congregate in the warm 5 water discharge sites at power plants in the state, including 6 potential risks to manatees at these sites from disease or the 7 loss of the warm water habitat; and 8 2. How the loss of warm water habitat may affect the 9 size and health of both the manatee population and the health 10 of submerged aquatic vegetation.
