2A resolution recognizing March 2004 as Colon Cancer
3Awareness Month in Florida.

5     WHEREAS, among cancer cases in the state, colon cancer is
6the second most common cancer death among men and women, and
7     WHEREAS, the Florida Division of the American Cancer
8Society estimates that a total of 9,950 new cases of colon
9cancer will be diagnosed among the state's residents and that
103,840 Floridians will die from the disease during the year 2004,
11and
12     WHEREAS, complying with the American Cancer Society's colon
13cancer screening guidelines can lower the number of cases by
14leading to the early detection and removal of polyps that could
15become cancerous, and
16     WHEREAS, when diagnosed early, 91 percent of people with
17colon cancer survive, NOW, THEREFORE,

19Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
20Florida:

22     That the House of Representatives recognizes the month of
23March 2004 as Colon Cancer Awareness Month in Florida and urges
24all Floridians to understand the risks associated with colon
25cancer, to take preventive steps to minimize those risks, and to
26undergo early detection procedures in compliance with the
27American Cancer Society's screening guidelines as effective
28preventive measures.
