House Resolution
3A resolution designating April 15, 2004, as "University of
4Florida Day" in Tallahassee.

6     WHEREAS, the University of Florida, the state's only
7university honored by membership in the prestigious Association
8of American Universities, has recently completed its
9sesquicentennial celebration and now, led by its new president,
10Dr. J. Bernard Machen, looks forward to even greater
11achievements in teaching, research, and service, and
12     WHEREAS, in 2003, the university ranked first among all
13universities in landing International Baccalaureate students and
14was first among all public universities in the number of
15National Achievement Scholars enrolled and second for National
16Merit Scholar enrollees, and
17     WHEREAS, one of the five largest in the nation, with
18students from all 67 Florida counties, the university was
19awarded a record $458 million in research and training grants in
20academic year 2002-2003, earned a Top-5 ranking by Kiplinger
21Magazine, and is one of the most diverse in the number of
22academic programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels,
23and
24     WHEREAS, the university's Institute of Food and
25Agricultural Sciences provides extension services to each
26Florida county, its health-related research and clinics serve
27Floridians each day, and its faculty, staff, and students
28contribute donations and charitable services to the local
29community, and
30     WHEREAS, a national Top-Ten student-athletic program for
31the past 20 years, the top-ranked varsity program for both men
32and women consistently produces exceptional student athletes,
33placing a record 193 student-athletes on the Southeastern
34Conference Academic Honor Roll in 2002-2003, and
35     WHEREAS, Florida graduates have left indelible, positive
36marks on society, as exemplified by Heisman Trophy and Draddy
37Award winner and honors graduate Danny Wuerffel, whose efforts
38off the playing field are as notable as they were on, especially
39in his work with underprivileged youth, NOW, THEREFORE,

41Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
42Florida:

44     That the House of Representatives designates April 15,
452004, as "University of Florida Day" in Tallahassee in
46recognition of the university's contributions to the state,
47nation, and world.
48     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be
49presented to Dr. J. Bernard Machen, President of the University
50of Florida, as a tangible token of the sentiments expressed
51herein.
