1 A bill to be entitled
2 An act relating to scholarships for military
3 personnel; amending s. 1009.534, F.S.;
4 providing eligibility requirements for a member
5 of Florida's military who served in the War in
6 Afghanistan or the War in Iraq to receive a
7 Florida Academic Scholars award; providing an
8 effective date.

10 Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

12 Section 1. Subsection (5) is added to section
13 1009.534, Florida Statutes, to read:
14 1009.534 Florida Academic Scholars award.--
15 (5) Notwithstanding the provisions of s. 1009.531 and
16 this section, a member of Florida's military who has served in
17 the War in Afghanistan or the War in Iraq is eligible for a
18 Florida Academic Scholars award if he or she meets the
19 following requirements:
20 (a) Has lived in the state for 2 years prior to
21 serving in Afghanistan or Iraq.
22 (b) Has received a high school diploma or its
23 equivalent, provided that this requirement is not restricted
24 to a high school diploma or its equivalent awarded in Florida.
25 (c) Has not received a dishonorable discharge from the
26 military.

28 For purposes of determining initial eligibility for a Florida
29 Academic Scholars award, there is no grade point average
30 requirement. However, to be eligible for a renewal award as a

1 Florida Academic Scholar, a student must maintain the grade
2 point average specified in subsection (3).
3 Section 2. This act shall take effect July 1, 2005.
