| 11 | boards to adopt policies to provide each student a |
| 12 | complete education program; providing an effective date. |

| 14 | Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida: |
| 15 |
|
| 16 | Section 1. Subsection (1) of section 1001.03, Florida |
| 17 | Statutes, is amended to read: |
| 18 | 1001.03 Specific powers of State Board of Education.-- |
| 19 | (1) PUBLIC K-12 STUDENT PERFORMANCE STANDARDS.--The State |
| 20 | Board of Education shall approve the student performance |
| 21 | standards known as the Sunshine State Standards in key academic |
| 22 | subject areas and grade levels. The state board shall |
| 23 | periodically review the standards to ensure adequate rigor and |
| 24 | evaluate the extent to which the standards are being taught at |
| 25 | each grade level. The evaluation shall be provided to the |
| 26 | Governor, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and the |
| 27 | President of the Senate and shall include a determination of the |
| 28 | district school boards' provision of a complete education |
| 29 | program pursuant to s. 1001.41(3). |
| 30 | Section 2. Subsection (3) of section 1001.41, Florida |
| 31 | Statutes, is amended to read: |
| 32 | 1001.41 General powers of district school board.--The |
| 33 | district school board, after considering recommendations |
| 34 | submitted by the district school superintendent, shall exercise |
| 35 | the following general powers: |
| 36 | (3) Prescribe and adopt standards and policies to provide |
| 37 | each student the opportunity to receive a complete education |
| 38 | program, including language arts, mathematics, science, social |
| 39 | studies, health, physical education, foreign languages, and the |
| 40 | arts as defined by the Sunshine State Standards pursuant to s. |
| 41 | 1001.03(1) as are considered desirable by it for improving the |
| 42 | district school system. |
| 43 | Section 3. This act shall take effect July 1, 2005. |
