2A resolution commemorating the Pontian Greek genocide of
31914-1922.

5     WHEREAS, from 1914 to 1922, in a systematic attempt to
6exterminate an entire civilization, the Ottoman Turks directed
7the genocide of 353,000 Greeks living in Pontus and forced an
8equal amount to flee their homeland, and
9     WHEREAS, today we solemnly remember the victims of this
10devastating event in the fervent hope that their memories may
11serve to stir the conscience of the world, and
12     WHEREAS, it is of paramount importance that utmost emphasis
13be placed on the necessity for all civilized nations to remain
14ever vigilant against tyranny in the firm determination that
15such atrocities never again be perpetrated against humankind,
16and
17     WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper to remember those who
18lost their lives in the Pontian Greek genocide of 1914-1922 and
19to pay tribute and extend our gratitude to the survivors and
20their descendants who have made countless enriching
21contributions to our culture and way of life in this state and
22this nation, NOW, THEREFORE,

24Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
25Florida:

27     That the Florida House of Representatives joins in
28commemorating the Pontian Greek Genocide of 1914-1922 and
29commends the Pontian Greek people for their significant
30contributions to civilization.
