  1                        Senate Resolution

  2         A resolution recognizing Hadassah, the Women's

  3         Zionist Organization of America, and commending

  4         its members in the Florida Central, Florida

  5         Broward, Greater Miami, and Florida Atlantic

  6         Regions on playing a vital role in improving

  7         the quality of life of people in Florida and

  8         the United States, in Israel, and elsewhere in

  9         the world.

11         WHEREAS, Hadassah, the Women's Zionist Organization of

12  America, the largest Zionist, largest Jewish, and largest

13  women's membership organization in the country, was founded in

14  1912 by Henrietta Szold to help meet the medical needs of

15  Palestinians, and

16         WHEREAS, since that time, Hadassah has been a leading

17  force in meeting Israel's medical needs through Mt. Scopus

18  Hospital, Ein Karem Hospital, and various clinics across the

19  country, and

20         WHEREAS, Hadassah hospitals, in addition to serving as

21  a model of peaceful coexistence in the Middle East, provide

22  state-of-the-art health care to 600,000 patients a year -

23  regardless of race, religion, or creed - and often treat the

24  most critically wounded in the region's ongoing conflicts, and

25         WHEREAS, in the United States, Hadassah women sold $200

26  million in U.S. World War II bonds as their first national

27  domestic effort, and

28         WHEREAS, since then, Hadassah women have been actively

29  engaged in domestic health-education programs concerning

30  breast cancer and osteoporosis; voter-registration efforts;

31  Jewish education; grassroots advocacy on U.S.-Israel

 1  relations, Jewish communal concerns, and women's issues;

 2  humanitarian relief to distressed communities and countries;

 3  and volunteer work in literacy programs and at

 4  domestic-violence shelters, and

 5         WHEREAS, nominated to receive the Nobel Peace Prize,

 6  the Hadassah Medical Organization is recognized for its

 7  excellence in promoting peace in the Middle East through its

 8  equal treatment for all people, including its care of more

 9  victims of terrorism than any other medical center in the

10  region, and, with its mixed staff of people of all faiths, for

11  its serving as a model of cooperation and coexistence in its

12  ongoing initiatives to create bridges for peace even

13  throughout the Intifada, and

14         WHEREAS, on Wednesday, March 22, 2006, Hadassah women

15  are at the Capitol in Tallahassee to help educate Florida

16  Legislators on the value of supporting embryonic stem cell

17  research for all Floridians, NOW, THEREFORE,

18  

19  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

20  

21         That Hadassah's Florida Central, Florida Broward,

22  Florida Atlantic, and Greater Miami Regions are commended on

23  the activities of their members in playing a vital role in

24  improving the quality of life of people in Florida and the

25  United States, in Israel, and elsewhere in the world.
